Learning philosophy

A.P. Moller - Maersk has a long tradition of ensuring that our employees’ work is exciting, developmental and challenging. Through delegation of responsibility, competent and supportive leadership and job rotation, we create opportunities for all our employees to enjoy rewarding and interesting jobs.

As a global organisation, A.P. Moller - Maersk places a lot of emphasis on using the best learning and training methods available. Our learning philosophy is based on the idea that personal and professional learning is most effective when it involves hands-on experience. We also believe that the acquisition of knowledge and skills should take place whenever it is needed, so employees can immediately put theory into practice.

Last but not least, we provide our employees with opportunities for personal development by offering them jobs requiring skills they might not have from day one. This gives the employee an opportunity to develop professional and personal competencies by working together with colleagues and management.

70-20-10 Principle

A.P. Moller - Maersk’s learning philosophy is based on the 70-20-10 Principle:

  • 70 % of an employee’s learning is achieved through constant on-the-job encouragement and stimulation – through delegation of responsibility and job rotation.
  • 20 % of learning is achieved through daily contact with colleagues and management. Discussion, feedback, coaching and appraisals are some of the methods used.
  • 10 % of learning results from more formal teaching methods, such as e-learning, classroom teaching or external courses. This kind of teaching will always be closely linked to the specific tasks and challenges presented by the current or future job.

Finally, job rotation ensures that development and learning is a continuous part of a career at A.P. Moller - Maersk
